Notes from the Redneck Riviera….

August 9, 2010
by Paul Jones

Well it is day 2 here in the wilds of the Myrtle Beach SC area.  Lots of people here, and if you were taking stock of an economic downturn, I am not seeing  it.  The people here are spending money, and there are lots of them here.  Granted, we have not ventured out much other than the beach, grocery store, and the obligatory WalMart trip.  (It has to happen every year, goodness knows what would happen if we went to a beach that didn’t have a WallyWorld within 30 minute drive) .  People are here, lots of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan license plates.  So the regulars are being regular!  One of the locals I chatted with seemed to think that due to the Gulf Coast of FL being in a state of flux with tourism, people are avoiding oil risk and coming to NC/SC beaches.  Well, we will take their money too! 😉

There is an interesting discussion in the Myrtle Beach/Horry County SC area government that my Mother In Law had heard about, then we verified by chatting around, that a bill is being considered to ban the use of the 10×10 E-Z Up Tents on the beach.  Seems some people are abusing the privilege of bringing them, and using 4 or 5 of them to set up TajMaTent compounds bright and early in the morning to stake out positions, then not come back to them until after lunch, therefore occupying prime beach realestate.  If you build it, use it.  Otherwise, I will encourage squatters!  One other reason is that the revenues are down on umbrella and chair rentals.  (Boils down to money doesn’t it).  Well, when offered, I usually get a chair/umbrella set because it guarantees me and my crew a space on the beach.  Plus you get to know the lifeguards, and they look out for you.  (Less stuff to Pack Mule from condo to beach and back is a bonus as well)

The 3 boys (one that is mine, and two cousins) are having fun, and getting plenty of wave time in.  We hit the tides just right, so we have lots of beach and good waves.

All stripes of people here this week.  It makes for great people watching.

One last fact for this update.  On my walk this morning, (3.3 miles, whoohoo!) I came to the conclusion that the younger generations will acknowledge a hello/good morning more than the older generations will.  Not sure what that signifies but I did find it quite unique.

You all have a super day.

Exercise on vacay? I’m impressed. Interesting discussion on the beach umbrellas. A few who abuse the system can quickly ruin it for all.

Well, not so sure it was a good idea, rolled left ankle Saturday loading car, has hurt since, was hardheaded and walked this morning. (so many other people doing it, I had to!)

The beach umbrella/ez up tent debate is going to be fun to watch! (we use both)

Great post Paul! I am with you on the no squatting on beach front policy. – overall I am for vacations at the Carolina coast. :)

Yeah that is a habit that galls me. We never leave our stuff unattended but for maybe 30 mins.

I am such a beach bum. I will live in Beaufort/Morehead City NC area….

Those squatter-tent-complexes irk me! So obnoxious! I was shocked at how much “real estate” people at North Myrtle Beach took when we were there last month. So uncool! We really enjoyed Emerald Isle/Beaufort/Cape Lookout over the last ten days. Hope you have an equally awesome vacation!
